  • The Angry Birds Mine and Dine update has just landed on the Ovi Store, but as a couple of NokNok readers have already spotted, updating could put your game data in jeopardy. Makes sense, then, to back it up first, and here we show you how.
Angry Birds Mine and Dine levels land for Symbian^3 users
Angry Birds fans are no doubt excited about the prospect of 45 new levels to sink their teeth into. But as pointed out by a few early adopters who have jumped at the prospect of landing the new Mine and Dine levels, updating via the Ovi Store potentially wipes out your game data, leaving you having to start the game from scratch.
Whether this is just a glitch affecting a few users or a wider issue all Symbian^3 users need to watch out for, the sensible course of action is to back up your game data before updating so you're protected no matter what happens.
Fortunately, that's not only possible but relatively straightforward too. The key files you need to look out for are highscores.lua and settings.lua – copy them over to your PC or Mac before updating, and once you've finished the update process, simply replace them on your phone again, and your precious game data will be restored exactly as it was.
The exact process, and the folders you need to look out for, is slightly different depending on the exact version of Angry Birds you're running, and whether you're talking about a PC or a Mac, but NiTiSHmurthy's blog has kindly documented all the variations, complete with screenshots.
Interestingly, he also points out that this process also covers you if you're switching from one platform to another, so if you've been enjoying Angry Birds on another smartphone and are looking to try your hand on a Symbian^3 phone for the first time, it'll show you how to transfer your game data across.
